knee deep in weeds

notes on living a life

October, baptize me with leaves! Swaddle me in corduroy and nurse me with split pea soup. October, tuck tiny candy bars in my pockets and carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins. O autumn! O teakettle! O grace!”

~ Rainbow Rowell, Attachments

October is welcomed through the portals of fall

wandering in slowly

leaves furled and flattened beneath her feet

as she and the dog scrutinize their surroundings

his nose close to the ground

while her eyes follow the light and shadows encompassing them

glancing down she can't help but laugh at the dirt he has picked up

on his shiny black nose

she spots a smooth gray stone, shaped like a heart

but does not bend to pick it up

leaving it for another day maybe?

or better yet, a sign for lovers who might take the same path

she thinks of the dozen half used pencils at home

all of then crammed into the cracked pottery mug sitting on her desk

and asks the dog if he is ready to head back now

for suddenly her head is full of words

and she can't wait to welcome October

the sun and fall together are just about perfection

there have been long walks the last few days around the pond

the dog on his leash and me with my cane

oh gosh it feels good. . .
