I believe that everything starts by paying attention. Life is imperfect and any magical light we can bring into our day is worthy of our gratitude. Laughter and love, joy and celebrations slip into our lives with ease but learning to cope with the deep pain life brings to us is also necessary. I do this best with my camera, chasing down light, zooming in and out and pairing it all with truth. 

I live in Western Washington with my husband of 40+ years, in the home where we raised our three sons. We share that home now with our sweet beagle named Baker.

a recipe

“Growing up, my mom made dinner every night. Usually this would be a large salad with kale, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, all organic of course, and sometimes she’d sprinkle nuts on top for texture. Kale has a metallic taste, like chewing on the hood of a Mercedes. No, something safer, like a Volvo.”

i headed out the garden a few days ago
and just like that, the kale has bolted
i picked the last of the leaves and made soup
soup with quinoa and lentils, garlic and sun dried tomatoes, 
(because i did not have a can of tomatoes)
i added some smoked paprika, a bit of cayenne, a bay leaf and some chicken stock
when everything was tender i sliced a lemon
and added one to my bowl, before i ladled it up
i topped it all with some leftover sliced roasted chicken


i still have a few beets out there
