notes on living a life

dog sitting

“Romance novels are birthday cake and life is often peanut butter and jelly. I think everyone should have lots of delicious romance novels lying around for those times when the peanut butter of life gets stuck to the roof of your mouth.”
― Janet Evanovich

we spend the week dog sitting for our kids
by the end of the week, i am beyond tired
and in need of my home, my bed, and my routine

we search for things to fill our time, between potty breaks
and dinner, taking rides that are close enough to their homes
that no-one goes hungry or is ignored

at Brandon and Courtney i feed the turtles and the chickens and he
puts them to bed, i water Brandon's garden,
and walk as the day cools down

we head to the small park on the sound one day,
and the children beg to pet Baker
i watch a woman swim and tell him
maybe that will be me next year. . .

i move houses mid-week, alone,
he and the dog come to visit during the day
but i am restless and a bit unsettled

we come to understand our communication skills lack
and need a bit refining, i need to speak up more
and he needs to not be so single focused. . .
marriage is hard work, even after 42 years

i stand one night, at Jordan and Katie's and watch
the sun set, Meyer stands beside me wondering what
i am looking at, he and i both happy it has cooled down

we are all happy to get home

how was your week?
