notes on living a life

“The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.”
― Barbara Kingsolver, Animal Dreams

lately the days have been full of fall
streaks of sunbeams mingled with moments of rain
the rain soothes, especially at night, and i am
cradled in calm as i listen to it hit our metal roof

i put the down comforter back on the bed
and turn the heat on for the first time
i watch the first episode of This is Us and wonder if Acorn TV
has ruined American TV for me forever

we put the vegetable garden to rest
and he puts the yard furniture away
i pick bouquets of flowers by the armful
knowing if left to the rains, the blooms
will only melt on their stems

the dog and i walk, mostly around the neighborhood
incorporating fresh air with a bit of puppy training
but truthfully i mainly let him be, allowing him to explore at will
with no agenda, other than giving him room to notice

A dog is one of the remaining reasons why some people can be persuaded to go for a walk.
