I Ask Percy How I Should Live My Life
by Mary Oliver

Love, love, love, says Percy.
And hurry as fast as you can
along the shining beach, or the rubble, or the dust.

Then, go to sleep.
Give up your body heat, your beating heart.
Then, trust.

Today is my mother's birthday, she would be 96.
Today is also Mary Oliver's birthday, she is 82.
I cleaned the house today, dusted the blinds,
and got deep under the beds. Mom would be proud.
After dinner (salmon and salad) we took the dog to the river
where we let him run dragging his leash for almost three miles.
Mary would approve I think, he is a beagle after all
and can't be totally trusted.
